Why Choose Fern Creek Psychotherapy?
Hi, I'm Anneliese Mack
OWNER, FERN CREEK PSYCHOTHERAPY
Registered Psychotherapist
I believe we have no control over the circumstances in our lives, but we can choose the meaning we attribute to our experiences.
Through listening and gently exploring your story, together we can build new narratives, full of possibility.
When you are seen and heard, the therapy process will enable and empower you to incorporate your past with your present in a way that permits you to live better.
I believe we can help you see and use your own strengths to start living more fully now and in the future.
These principles guide our team to help you get the results you need.

Yes, we offer art therapy for all ages. It is not just for kids and you do not have to be an artist to participate. The Canadian Art Therapy Association explains it as, “Art therapy combines the creative process and psychotherapy, facilitating self-exploration and understanding. Using imagery, colour and shape as part of this creative therapeutic process, thoughts and feelings can be expressed that would otherwise be difficult to articulate.” If you are seeing a certified art therapist, you will not necessarily always do art. Doing art in therapy is just one of the tools the therapist utilizes when it feels appropriate.
Yes, we have therapists whose area of focus is working with children. When working with children, we ally strongly with the child in an effort to create a strong therapeutic relationship. That relationship helps the child develop feelings of safety and security within the therapeutic setting which enables them to trust in the process.
Typically we start with a parent/primary caregiver only session and we recommend it in order to get a good background of presenting concerns without adding to the child’s distress. We also strongly recommend parents seek their own psychotherapy to help them understand their own triggers and parenting style and to get support for the difficult job of parenting. We can offer a therapist for that purpose, but an ongoing therapist will be a different therapist than their child therapist.
It is sometimes difficult for parents to accept the limits of confidentiality that are innately embedded in the therapeutic process. Entrusting your child to a stranger can be difficult, but please know we have your child’s best interest at the center of all our interactions, which is something the therapist often has in common with the primary caregivers.
The main difference lies in their professional training, the scope of practice, and their ability to diagnose and prescribe medication. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can prescribe medication and provide diagnosis. A psychologist specializes in psychological testing, assessment and diagnosis and often also does talk therapy. A psychologist cannot prescribe medication. A psychotherapist mainly does talk-based therapy with the purpose to help people improve and maintain their mental health and well-being. A psychotherapist cannot diagnose or prescribe medication. A social worker focuses on both therapeutic intervention and the broader social/systemic factors affecting a person’s well-being. A social worker cannot diagnose or prescribe medication.
